Jesus reveals that salvation requires both His deity and His death—and in the happy exchange of the Gospel, He takes our sin and death and gives us His righteousness and life, enabling us to follow Him by taking up our cross and discovering the life only His resurrection can give.
Matthew 16 reveals two essential truths about salvation: who Jesus must be and what Jesus must do. Peter rightly confesses Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the living God—salvation requires deity.
But Jesus immediately teaches that salvation also requires His suffering, death, and resurrection. Peter resists the idea of a crucified Messiah, showing our shared temptation to want Christ without a cross.
Jesus then turns to His disciples and calls them to follow Him by denying themselves, taking up their cross, and losing their life for His sake—trusting that in Him they will find true life.
The question, “What shall a person give in exchange for their soul?” becomes the Gospel’s doorway. Our soul is worth more than the whole world, yet God provides a blessed exchange: we give Christ our sins, and He gives us His righteousness; we give Him our death, and He gives us His life.
Ultimately, only Jesus’ cross empowers our cross bearing, and only His resurrection gives us the life He promises.
